Luang Prabang, Laos: A mini travel guide

Luang Prabang, profoundly influenced by the French, unquestionably earns the title of the UNESCO world Heritage Site. Although pricey for a traveller on a budget, this exquisite town in Laos is not to be missed under any circumstances.

Give it a week at least to soak in the grace of this place, especially if you’ve been travelling around SE Asia for some time. situated on the peninsula formed by the Mekong and the Nam Khan River, Luang Prabang is a perfect spot to unwind, eat good food and enjoy the scenery.

This relatively small, palm-fringed place is packed with fabulous colonial villas, top-class restaurants, coffee shops and stunning Buddhist temples. It’s a perfect destination if you are in the process of deciding where to travel in Laos.

Getting to Luang Prabang

Per via aerea

Luang Prabang is a popular destination amongst package travellers and is easily reachable by air. Flights run from many major cities in the neighbouring countries such as Bangkok and Chiang Mai in Thailand, Hanoi in Vietnam, and Siem Reap in Cambodia.

Domestic flights run from Vientiane, the capital of Laos. The new international airport is conveniently located only 5 km north-east of the city.

There’s no train network anywhere in Laos so the bus journeys will take hours for you to reach Luang Prabang. To book a bus ask at your hotel or travel agency. We don’t recommend getting a bus unless you are absolutely stuck. For a better experience, opt for a boat trip along the scenic Mekong river.

In barca

One of the most spectacular ways to arrive to Luang Prabang is by boat. There are 3 types of boat trips you can take from the small border town of Huay Xai in northern Laos.

The cheapest option is the public slow boat, however boats get quite crowded during the high season and might be slightly uncomfortable for a 2 day journey.

A speedboat is a little more expensive but takes you to Luang Prabang in around 6 hours. While this might sound adventurous, the journey can also be rather dangerous with fatal injuries due to the risk of the boats crashing into the rocks in the river.

We booked a 2 day slow boat tour via Mekong Smile cruise and had a fantastic experience. This is the most expensive option, but really worth it.

Hassle-free, relaxed and smooth sailing along the Mekong river will allow you to enjoy the scenery. With a knowledgeable English-speaking guide, tasty food onboard and an overnight accommodation arranged, you will have a great time.

Where to stay in Luang Prabang

The UNESCO world Heritage site status and becoming a destination popular amongst package travellers, has no doubt pushed the prices up. However, if you do your research, you can still find gems wedged in between the luxury $260 per night hotels.

Lucky for you, we did some research already and found a charming and economical place in the posh end of town.

Oui’s Guesthouse 

If you are looking for a comfortable and quality rest stop in Luang Prabang, Oui’s Guesthouse might be just right for you. A cosy, two storey guesthouse, overlooking the river Khan sits nearly at the end of the peninsula.

For $30 you will enjoy a spacious double room with a comfortable bed, clean sheets and fresh towels, good breakfast and a lovely view from the shared terrace. The breakfast is simple, but well prepared and tasty, garnished with fresh herbs from their own garden on the river bank.

We stayed here for a week and found the guest house comfortable and the staff helpful and friendly.

Where to eat in Luang Prabang

There is no shortage of places to eat in Luang Prabang. Whether you simply love a good bite or are a travel foodie, you will not be disappointed. From top-class restaurants and bakeries to cheaper eats at the local market, Luang Prabang has it all.

Pizza Phan Luang

This simple, yet romantic candlelit restaurant is a great choice if you are craving for something simple, ordinary like pizza. except that the pizzas here are extraordinary.

Stone baked, crisp Italian base, fresh ingredients and anchovies are shipped directly from Italy, pure heaven. pair it with a glass of wine or Beer Lao and enjoy a perfect evening.

The restaurant is located only a few steps across the bamboo bridge from the bUzzing di Luang Prabang Town. Una volta attraversato il ponte, oltrepassa il ristorante Dyen Sabai e cerca l’Emerson English Center o un cartello “Pizza” accanto ad esso.

Per sbagliare sulla cena, vai a Dyen Sabai attraverso lo stesso ponte di bambù. Il ristorante si trova letteralmente in cima alle scale non appena raggiungi l’altro lato del fiume Nam Khan.

Nascosto in dintorni nella giungla, il ristorante offre uno sfondo meraviglioso alla tua esperienza culinaria. I posti a sedere variano da cabine private e tavoli ordinari con sedie a ponti più rilassati con futon laotiani e tavoli bassi. Signore, potresti voler indossare qualcosa di un po ‘più discreto se si sceglie quest’ultima area salotto.

Per quanto riguarda il cibo, avrai una meravigliosa varietà di laos e fusione asiatica tra cui scegliere. Il menu viene modificato frequentemente, a seconda dei prodotti freschi disponibili. Mercato notturno locale

Il mercato si trova su Sisavangvong Rd, dietro l’ufficio del turismo nazionale di Lao.

La Banneton Cafe

Per un dolore appena cotto, al cioccolat, al panetteria francese La Banneton Cafe. Assicurati di arrivarci presto prima che i pasticcini se ne vadano. Anche i tossicodipendenti saranno felici di aumentare la loro assunzione di caffeina qui. Oh, e non dimenticare il gelato.

Cosa fare a Luang Prabang

Lezioni di cucina

L’abbondanza di ristoranti di grande qualità qui è semplicemente impressionante. Quindi, se ami il cibo e vuoi imparare i segreti della grande fusione asiatica, perché non iscriverti a un corso di cucina? Prova il ristorante Tamarind o Tamnak Lao che fornisce lezioni di cucina mattutina o serale.

Shopping

Se stai cercando vestiti, souvenir, tessuti o gioielli, sei nel posto giusto. Passa nei negozi carini nella strada principale o in un negozio più tardi al Luang Prabang Night Market (aperto dalle 17.00-23,00).

Visita i templi

Luang Prabang è tempestato di splendidi wats. Se sei a poco tempo, almeno scoppi in Wat Mai Suwannaphumaham, situato accanto al Royal Palace. È il tempio più grande ed elaborato di Luang Prabang.

Royal Palace Museum

È probabilmente il palazzo reale più basilare e meno elaborato in cui siamo stati in Asia di SSI. Abbiamo trovato alcuni artefatti interessanti qui, incluso il pezzo di roccia lunare che ha dato al Laos dopo il primo atterraggio della luna americano. La quota di ammissione è inferiore a $ 4 e ricordati di vestirsi modestamente.

Cattura un tramonto

La maggior parte dei visitatori si arrampica in alto su Phu Si Hill proprio di fronte al palazzo reale per catturare il tramonto.

Anche se potrebbe essere un posto perfetto per Instagramming la tua visita, diventa davvero affollato lassù e alcuni visitatori possono essere un po ‘invadenti. Ma se ami le viste panoramiche, vale la pena scalare.

Visita la cascata di Kuang Si

Possiamo garantire che questo sarà il momento clou della tua visita a Luang Prabang, è un’attività “da non perdere”. Prendi la tua attrezzatura da nuoto, salta in un tuk tuk o affitta una moto e goditi la giornata nelle piscine naturali turchese nella giungla.

La strada principale per la cascata è facile da seguire e pavimentata fino all’ingresso. La quota di ammissione è di $ 2,50 a persona che include anche un’anteprima nel centro di salvataggio dell’orso.

Molto probabilmente trascorrerai un’intera giornata divertendoti, quindi prepara alcuni snack, poiché le opzioni alimentari all’interno del parco sono limitate e costose.
